Upcoming 25: Events Around NYC (Sept. 25-Oct. 25, 2009)

unnameable-books-vanderbilt-0609We’re a day late — but still able to deliver a nice round-up of excellent events and programming happening at or in partnership with indie bookstores around NYC over the next month:

Start with TODAY, Sept. 26th, at HOUSINGWORKS Open Air Street Fair – going on RIGHT NOW, until 6 pm, with live music and tons of great deals on books all day long! And if you happen to be nearby there around 5 pm, try stopping by MCNALLY JACKSON where actor John Krasinski will discuss his recent adaptation of David Foster Wallace’s Brief Interviews with Hideous Men.

Tomorrow, Sunday, Sept. 27 – head on over to UNNAMEABLE BOOKS (Facebook Link) for an afternoon poetry reading with three poets in town from Seattle, Chicago, Detroit: Jeanne Heuving, Jennifer Scappettone, Chris Tysh.

Thursday, October 1: at WORD: 7:30 pm – Mike Edison’s Second Annual Banned Book Party, with special guests Richard Nash and Lizzie Skurnick. In honor of Banned Books Week.

Tuesday, October 6: at THREE LIVES & CO.: 7 PM – Edmund White reads from City Boy: My Life in New York During the 1960s and ’70s

Thursday, October 8: at STRAND BOOKSTORE – 7 PM: novelist Christopher Bram, author of Gods and Monsters, will read from his first collection of non-fiction, Mapping the Territory

Friday, October 9: at BLUESTOCKINGS – 7 PM: Beverly Gologorsky reads from The Things We Do to Make it Home. With Wesley Brown (author of “Darktown Strutters”) and Jane Lazarre (author of “Beyond The Whiteness of Whiteness”)

Sunday, October 11: at FREEBIRD BOOKS & GOODS – 7 PM: The Word on Columbia Street and Freebird host a rare screening of It Don’t Pay to be an Honest Citizen, in the outdoor lot next to the bookstore – with refreshments and commentary from the director, Jacob Burckhardt.

Wednesday, October 21: at RIZZOLI BOOKSTORE – 5:30 PM:  Pamela Golbin, curator at the Musee des Arts Decoratifs in Paris, in NYC for the launch of her new book spotlighting the pioneering designs of Madeleine Vionnet as worn by 80 internationally famous models photographed especially for this book.

Thursday, October 22:

at BANK STREET BOOKSTORE – 4 PM: Storytelling and Music with Mark Binder, for ages 5 & up.

GraffitiPlanetat POWERHOUSE ARENA: 7 PM – award-winning author and journalist Warren Berger reads and signs his new book, Glimmer, about how design can transform your life, your business, and maybe even the world.

Saturday, October 24: at REVOLUTION BOOKS -6 PM: opening book party for 5 great new Graffiti Books presented by artist and writer Alan Ket.

Saturday, October 24 & Sunday, October 25: at GREENLIGHT BOOKSTORE: Grand Opening Weekend is planned for the new Ft. Green indie bookstore! Watch their blog for all the details!

Finally, some news from BROWNSTONE BOOKS: beginning 9/25, they’ve begun a new program called Musica Para Mi every Friday morning at 10 am through 12/18:  The joy of music and Spanish in a total immersion fiesta! Babies and toddlers bring their adults to weekly 45 minute classes of singing, dancing, small hand percussion and more, all in Spanish. (PS: they seem to be the latest NYC indie to join Twitter – follow them here!)
