Independent Booksellers of New York City

Shop local – Don't go by the book!

Indiebound Spotlight: McNally Jackson

mcjThroughout May, we’ll spotlight different NYC indie bookstores on our blog. IBNYC booksellers will tell us about some favorite independent businesses located near their shops, so when you’re out browsing at the bookstores, you’ll have info on other Indiebound businesses to visit nearby. This is a guide for shoppers and a resource for booksellers from around the world who will be visiting NYC this month for Book Expo America.

McNally Jackson Booksellers is a spacious independent bookstore in Nolita, where Soho, Noho, the Lower East Side, Chinatown, and Little Italy meet. Known for its’ stellar events program and wonderfully rich collection of new books, McNally Jackson also has a great cafe and nook where readers can linger with coffee and a good book. Check out their blog, The Common Reader, where they describe a good bookstore as “not just a place to buy books, but a place to love them.” McNally Jackson is definitely one of those places in New York City.

We received a short list of favorite local eateries located near McNally Jackson from the store’s events coordinator, Jessica Stockton Bagnulo. So, if you’d like more than a coffee and sandwich from McNally’s cafe, here are some other foodie suggestions: Lahore, a popular Pakistani deli with affordable and delicious take-out; The Kitchen Club, for dumplings, soba noodles and sake; and Cafe Gitane, one of Jessica’s go-to meeting spots. She also gave a thumbs up to two indie businesses that McNally Jackson has partnered with for events – Wine Therapy, which carries a nice variety of specialty and organic wines, and Pinche Taqueria, who will cater an upcoming book party for a new release partially set in Mexico. (The event is not listed on their website just yet, but keep an eye out for it!) Jessica says Pinche is the perfect local restaurant to satisfy reader’s cravings for Mexican cuisine! Let’s go get a taco…
