Summer’s not over just yet, but anticipation for fall literary happenings is mounting. Heck, there’s great events scheduled for this week and through Labor Day too – so let’s get to it. Check out the plethora of fantastic programming planned for the next month at indie bookstores around NYC – literary readings, book launch parties, concerts, workshops, children’s storytime hours + more — like these two art exhibits that kick off our latest Upcoming 25 listing:
at SKYLINE BOOKS: a new ArtWall at the shop offers local artists in NYC a unique venue to exhibit their art. The first in a series of exhibits is now on display – Sean Hanratty shows pieces from his series Photosynthesis (like the one shown above)
at MELVILLE HOUSE BOOKSTORE: September 1 through October 9 (opening Sept. 10th 6-8 PM) – The Philosophy of Travel: New Paintings by Ayad Sinawi

Wednesday, September 2: at HOUSING WORKS BOOKSTORE – 7 PM: Yellow Bird Project presents a performance by Elvis Perkins and DJ Set by members of Ra Ra Riot in celebration of the release of their Indie Rock Coloring Book.
Thursday, September 3: at GLOBETRIPPIN - Candy Making Class: Guest chef Angela Jackson visits. $35 includes treats to eat and take home. Limited space. Reservation required.
Monday, September 7: at MCNALLY JACKSON – 7 PM: Labor Day Series – James T. Fisher, author of On the Irish Waterfront: The Crusader, the Movies, and the Soul of the Port of New York, will discuss the history and famous dramatization of the working docks in mid-century New York.

at MIDTOWN COMICS (Times Square) – 4-6 PM: Marvel artist Phil Jimenez and Project Runway’s Tim Gunn will sign copies of Models Inc. from Marvel Comics, which features a story by Tim, and a variant cover with art by Phil.
at REVOLUTION BOOKS – 7 PM: Book Release Party with Chris Hedges for Empire of Illusion: The End of Literacy and the Triumph of Spectacle

Wednesday, September 23: at RIZZOLI BOOKSTORE – 5:30-7 PM: Photographer Diane Tuft will sign copies of her new book, Unseen: Photographs, a collection of remarkable images from remote parts of the world in which she alters the luminosity of the landscape through her use of infrared film or by her depiction of areas of hyper-ultraviolet levels.
Thursday, September 24: at STRAND BOOKSTORE – 7 PM: Drawn & Quarterly presents R. Sikoryak and R.O. Blechman, two multifaceted artists who have achieved international acclaim in the fields of animation, illustration and cartooning. Talking Lines collects a decade’s worth of Blechman’s comics, including The Juggler of Our Lady(1953), which was the first full-length graphic novel by a contemporary cartoonist. Sikoryak’s Masterpiece Comics collects 20 years of his comic adaptations of the classics, culled from anthologies such as Drawn & Quarterly, RAW and Hotwire.
